NonProfit Internship Program

The Community Engagement/Nonprofit Summer Internship Program is coordinated through the Pro Humanitate Center and the Office of the Chaplain. The program is designed to give undergraduate students interested in public service an intensive work experience in a nonprofit setting in the Winston-Salem community and the opportunity to engage in vocational reflection and discernment. The Community Engagement Internship Program offers training, intentional vocational reflection, mentoring, and financial support ($3,000). This internship program reflects the University’s motto “for humanity” and is supported by the Lilly Endowment’s “Sustaining the Theological Exploration of Vocation” program. Selection to the program is based on a competitive application process.

The full-time internships:

  • Are open to undergraduate students who have not yet completed their degree requirements.
  • Provide a $3,000 stipend (before taxes)
  • Are designed for students interested in careers in public service/nonprofit management
  • Require an eight week commitment in June-July, including a 40-hour work week. One day a week will be reserved for group training and vocational reflection. Interns are required to lead two vocational reflection sessions during the course of the 8 weeks.
  • Sites will be determined through consultation with internship coordinators.  Applicant interests and desired experiences will be solicited and considered

Program benefits:

  • Orientation to the nonprofit sector (with specific reference to Winston-Salem)
  • Orientation to issues related to community engagement and social justice, including organizing, advocacy and service
  • Weekly group training and vocational reflection sessions with community leaders and Wake Forest staff and faculty
  • On-site mentoring from internship supervisors
  • Assistance provided in locating summer housing.  Please note, however, that it is the responsibility of the student to secure and finance summer housing.
